BSI Newsletter (November, 2006)
Continuing its efforts to assist “Developing quality breast cancer
care in the developing countries”, the Breast Surgery International
has participated in the continuing medical education programs and
workshops in various corners of the developing world, which have
included XIV SIS world congress of breast diseases held in Croatia,
May 2006; joint meeting of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand
and ISS/SIC at Pattaya, Thailand in July 2006; and 2nd SGPGI Breast
Course at Lucknow, India on 25-26 November 2006. BSI president has
represented the ISS/SIC at the Pan Arabic Surgical conference held
in Amman, Jordan recently. The BSI international guest faculty need
to
be applauded for their philanthropic gestures for having
participated and actively contributed to success of numerous
surgical workshops and CME’s. The BSI would welcome any further
proposals for supporting future workshops and postgraduate courses,
especially in the developing countries. Proposals from members from
developing countries for BSI guest faculty to participate in
academic programs are welcome. The society would arrange for a few
international guest speakers participation, besides extending all
possible assistance.
In near future, the BSI wish to get involved in international
collaborative clinical research initiatives. BSI stands committed to
improving the number and quality of breast surgery related articles
published in World Journal of Surgery- the official journal of ISS/SIC
and BSI. Members are requested to consider submitting their quality
original work relating breast surgery for publication to the World
Journal of Surgery. BSI plans to invite full length manuscripts of
the papers selected for presentation in the BSI best paper award
session at the International Surgical Week ISW2007 in Montréal, as
well as symposia conveners and speakers to submit full length
manuscripts on contentious issues based on the proceedings of the
BSI symposia.
New and updated information about BSI activities and programs is now
available on the BSI home page:
http://www.breast-surg-intl.org. This URL can also be accessed
through the link for integrated societies on the ISS/SIC web-site
www.iss-sic.ch. Any suggestions
and feed back on the best possible use of the BSI webpages are
welcome from the BSI members as well as the wider membership of the
ISS/SIC, and may be submitted to the web-master through the BSI
web-site or directly. As in the past, the link to a panel of
“International Guest Faculty” is provided. These eminent breast
surgeons who have volunteered to receive visitors and to travel to
overseas institutions to share knowledge in the field of breast
surgery can be contacted through the web-site. Any BSI members
willing to act as an international guest faculty are requested to
write to the secretary with their information.
BSI Scientific Program at ISW2007 in Montreal, Canada:
An interesting and comprehensive scientific program has been charted
out for the 2007 BSI sectional program at ISW 2007. Besides the
usual features, new interesting sessions are planned, which include
morning educational sessions and debates, and a lunch time video
session. Details of the scientific and social programs can be found
on the congress web-site
www.ISW2007.org as well as the BSI web-site. Symposia on
contentious breast surgical issues such as hereditary breast
cancers, emerging technologies in breast surgery, debate on SLN
micrometastases, debates on adjuvant treatment, oncoplastic breast
cancer surgery, and breast cancer issues in developing countries are
planned.
Raimund Jakesz, President of BSI will convene a one day pre-congress
postgraduate course on Monday, which would need a separate
registration. Interested members are requested to register early, as
the course is expected to attract large interest, and number of
registrations is limited. The BSI free paper sessions have attracted
high numbers of quality research abstracts in the past and have been
well attended. We would urge you to send your best breast surgery
related clinical and research work for presentation in the free
paper session. Six best abstracts will be selected to be presented
in the BSI best paper award session, and to submit full length
manuscripts before the meeting which would enjoy a fast-track
publication in the World Journal of Surgery.
BSI Travel Award for attending the ISW2007 in Montreal, Canada:
For the first time, BSI will be awarding partial travel assistance
(inclusive registration to the BSI pre-congress Postgraduate course)
to at least two young BSI members whose work has been accepted for
presentation at the BSI sectional program at ISW2007. The details of
the application process can be found on the congress web-site and
brochure, as well as on the BSI web-site.
With the very best wishes, on behalf of the Breast Surgery
International council.
