BSI Newsletter (May, 2008)
Dear BSI members
This year is an interim year for ISW
but lots of preparatory work is going on. The local organizing
committee in Adelaide together with ISS headquarters, the affiliated
societies are preparing for Adelaide 2009. Peter Malycha founding
member of BSI and his team are preparing for the event where BSI
will have a program that will start on Sunday with a Post
Graduate Ultrasound course. Jay Harness, BSI president –elect
and Dr Beverly Barraclough from Sydney will be responsible for this
day that will give an overview and hands on advice on breast
imaging. Monday BSI organizes a PG course where updates on
breast cancer will be the main topic. Advanced breast cancer a topic
that concerns many of our members will be discussed in the program.
The scientific program contains educational sessions where we
hope to get curious surgical trainees to challenge the faculty with
cases to discuss. The Umberto Veronesi lecture will be given
by professor Emiel Rutgers from the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
Emiel has a vast experience of conducting trials in breast cancer
and has contributed much to the evolution of breast surgery. Among
the planned symposia breast cancer as a model of care will be
presented where participants from the National Breast and Ovarian
Cancer Center will take part. Oncoplastic surgery evolves and
becomes an integrated part of breast surgery. In this symposium
multiprofessionel aspects on this topic will be discussed. Posters
will be presented in the San Antonio mode, which means that
presenters will stand by their posters and discuss and answer
questions. Refreshments will be available during this afternoon
session.
Jim Kollias from Royal Adelaide
Hospital BSI member have graciously helped with the program so that
there will be ample local representation with Australasian
expertise. Jim has also promised BSI an exceptional social event
on Tuesday evening.
Manuscripts submitted to World Journal
of Surgery for the price winning session will be considered
for presentation and a poster prize will also be available.
Remember to use the web page
http://www.breast-surg-intl.org to communicate. Don’t forget to
pay your dues! Your contribution is important for the viability of
our society.
On behalf of BSI council I convey my
warmest greetings,
Kerstin Sandelin
